Dr. John R. Holland, former president of The Foursquare Church, died on October 2 at the age of 74. He had been ill with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, better known as ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease. He is survived by his wife, Doris; their four children, Brad, Johnnea, Bart and Jodi; and several grandchildren.
Holland was the third president of The Foursquare Church. He served in that role for nine years, following Dr. Rolf K. McPherson, who retired after serving for 44 years as president.
Having been a pastor for more than two decades, in addition to having served in supervisory roles for more than 15 years, Holland was uniquely graced with the qualities needed to assume the role of serving as president at that particular time in the life of The Foursquare Church. His keen administrative skills, combined with the heart of a true shepherd, enabled him to lead the movement into a period of both expansion and maturity.
After resigning from the presidency in 1997, Holland remained active in ministry even during "retirement." In addition to very extensive and successful ministry within The Foursquare Church, the Hollands also ministered effectively in wider sectors of the kingdom of God, particularly with Praise Chapel Christian Fellowship, Victory World Outreach and New Destiny Fellowship.
